Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Magdy, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Administrative Sciences, Prof. Dr. Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, the College of Administrative Sciences at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a specialized scientific workshop on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, entitled “The Devaluation of the Iraqi Dinar: Between Economic Gains and Social Costs.” The workshop brought together a distinguished group of academics and experts specializing in economics, finance, and monetary affairs. The workshop witnessed broad academic and community participation, including professors and researchers from several Iraqi universities, as well as prominent social figures from Babil Governorate. This participation reflected the significance of the topic and its direct connection to citizens’ economic circumstances and living standards, while also contributing to constructive scientific dialogue on exchange rate policies in Iraq. The workshop examined the economic and social consequences of devaluing the national currency and its implications for purchasing power, living standards, and fiscal and monetary policies. The discussions were structured around three main themes. The first theme, “The Social Costs of the Devaluation of the Iraqi Dinar,” was presented by Prof. Dr. Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an economic expert at Al-Ma’aqal University. He highlighted the effects of currency devaluation on purchasing power and the additional financial burdens imposed on different segments of society. The second theme, “Economic Gains and the Implications of Exchange Rate Changes,” was presented by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, Head of the Digital Economy Department at the Iraqi University. He discussed the potential economic effects of exchange rate adjustments in light of the characteristics of the Iraqi economy and the challenges facing fiscal and monetary policies. The third theme, “International Monetary Developments and Their Impact on Domestic Financial Stability,” was presented by Prof. Dr. Kamel Allawi, Professor of Monetary and Fiscal Policies at the University of Kufa. His presentation examined the role of decisions made by the U.S. Federal Reserve, fluctuations in the U.S. dollar, and global monetary policies in influencing the Iraqi economy. The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the need to base exchange rate decisions on comprehensive scientific and economic studies that balance potential economic gains against social costs. The recommendations also stressed the importance of considering the Iraqi economy’s heavy dependence on oil revenues, strengthening economic stability, and mitigating adverse effects on the most vulnerable groups in society. Organizing this workshop reflects Al-Mustaqbal University and the College of Administrative Sciences’ commitment to addressing pressing national economic issues, promoting constructive academic dialogue, and providing a scientific platform for exchanging expertise and perspectives among researchers and specialists. These efforts contribute to raising economic awareness and serving the wider community. Al-Mustaqbal University — The No. 1 University in Iraq
