Introduction Digital technology has become one of the most important factors affecting the development of the banking sector. Banks are no longer dependent mainly on traditional branches to provide their services. Instead, they increasingly use modern technologies to improve service delivery, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen relationships with customers. Digital transformation is not simply the conversion of paper-based transactions into electronic transactions. Rather, it represents a strategic process through which banks redesign their operations, utilize data, improve decision-making, and develop new business models. This issue is particularly important for Iraqi banks because of the growing need to develop banking services, expand electronic payment systems, strengthen financial inclusion, and reduce dependence on traditional cash-based transactions. Digital Transformation and Banking Efficiency Banking efficiency reflects the ability of banks to use their resources effectively in order to achieve better outcomes. Digital transformation can improve banking efficiency by reducing operating costs, accelerating transactions, and minimizing manual procedures. Digital banking services enable customers to conduct many transactions without visiting bank branches. This can reduce operational pressure on branches and allow banks to allocate their resources more efficiently. Moreover, digital data can improve managerial decision-making by providing banks with extensive information about customers, transactions, and financial activities. Digital Transformation and Banking Service Quality Digital transformation has significantly changed customer expectations. Customers increasingly expect banking services to be fast, accessible, secure, and convenient. Digital banking can improve service quality through: Faster transaction processing. Easier access to banking services. Reduced administrative procedures. * Greater accuracy. * Personalized banking products. * Twenty-four-hour service availability. Therefore, digital transformation can become an important competitive advantage for banks. Digital Transformation and Banking Sustainability Banking sustainability refers to the ability of banks to maintain stable performance and continue operating effectively over the long term while managing their resources and risks efficiently. Digital transformation can support banking sustainability by improving operational efficiency, reducing certain costs, diversifying banking services, and strengthening risk management. Digital banking also enables banks to reach new groups of customers who may not have easy access to traditional branches. Consequently, digital transformation can contribute to financial inclusion and strengthen the long-term sustainability of banking institutions. Digital Transformation and Banking Risk Managemen Despite its benefits, digital transformation creates new risks, particularly cybersecurity risks, electronic fraud, data breaches, and system interruptions. Therefore, banks need comprehensive digital risk-management frameworks that include continuous system updates, cybersecurity measures, employee training, data protection, and business-continuity plans. The relationship between digital transformation and risk management is therefore two-dimensional: technology can improve risk management capabilities while simultaneously creating new technological and cyber risks. Digital Transformation in Iraqi Banks Iraqi banks face several challenges in developing digital banking services, including the need to strengthen technological infrastructure, expand electronic payment systems, improve customers' digital awareness, and develop employees' technological skills. Nevertheless, digital transformation represents an important opportunity for Iraqi banks to modernize their business models, improve service quality, increase competitiveness, and expand financial inclusion. Conclusions Digital transformation has become an essential component of modern banking development. It can improve banking efficiency by reducing operating costs, accelerating transactions, improving data management, and enhancing service quality. Furthermore, digital transformation can contribute to banking sustainability by supporting long-term performance, service diversification, and broader customer access. However, digital transformation also introduces new challenges, particularly cybersecurity and digital risk management. Therefore, banks must adopt an integrated approach that combines technological development with effective governance and risk management. Recommendations Iraqi banks should continue investing in digital infrastructure and modern banking technologies. Banks should also strengthen employee training and develop specialized digital skills. Cybersecurity and customer-data protection should be considered strategic priorities. Furthermore, banks should increase customers' awareness of digital banking services and promote safe use of electronic financial channels. Finally, regulatory authorities and banking institutions should cooperate to create an appropriate environment for sustainable digital transformation in the Iraqi banking sector.
