Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Administrative Sciences, Prof. Dr. Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, the College organized a specialized scientific workshop on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, entitled “The Devaluation of the Iraqi Dinar: Between Economic Gains and Social Costs.” The workshop brought together academics and experts specializing in economics, fiscal policy, and monetary policy.
The workshop examined the implications of Iraqi dinar devaluation through three main scientific themes addressing the social, economic, and monetary dimensions of the issue.
The first theme, presented by Prof. Dr. Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an economic expert at Al-Ma'aqal University, focused on the social costs associated with dinar devaluation, particularly its effects on purchasing power, living standards, and the financial burdens borne by different segments of society.
The second theme was presented by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, Head of the Digital Economics Department at Al-Iraqia University. His presentation examined the potential economic gains of exchange rate adjustments and their implications for fiscal and monetary policies in light of the characteristics and challenges of the Iraqi economy.
The third theme, delivered by Prof. Dr. Kamil Allawi, Professor of Monetary and Fiscal Policies at the University of Kufa, addressed international monetary developments, highlighting decisions made by the US Federal Reserve, movements in the US dollar, and the effects of global monetary policies on domestic financial stability in Iraq.
The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the need for comprehensive scientific and economic studies before implementing exchange rate changes. Such assessments should balance economic objectives against social consequences, take into account Iraq’s substantial dependence on oil revenues, and seek to mitigate adverse effects on the most vulnerable segments of society.
This workshop reflects the commitment of Al-Mustaqbal University and its College of Administrative Sciences to advancing scientific research and academic dialogue on contemporary economic issues. It also provides a platform for exchanging specialized knowledge and perspectives to promote economic awareness and serve the wider community.
