The Department of Biology at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a practical scientific workshop for second-year students on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, under the supervision of Asst. Lect. Zainab Nazim Aziz. The workshop focused on the preparation of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA), a culture medium used for fungal cultivation and the study of fungal growth in laboratories.
The workshop reviewed the main components of the culture medium and the appropriate proportions required for its preparation, beginning with the preparation of potato extract and the addition of dextrose and agar. This was followed by adjusting the medium to the required volume, sterilizing it, and preparing it for pouring into Petri dishes after cooling to a suitable temperature. The importance of adhering to sterilization procedures and proper laboratory practices was also explained to minimize contamination and ensure the medium’s suitability for fungal growth.
The workshop aimed to provide students with practical experience in preparing fungal culture media and introduce them to their role in fungal isolation, cultivation, and the study of fungal characteristics. This supports their understanding of laboratory applications in microbiology.
This workshop is part of the scientific activities carried out by the Department of Biology to develop students’ practical skills and connect theoretical knowledge with laboratory applications in accordance with the requirements of the academic curriculum.
