As part of the global cancer awareness campaign and the activities of Pink October, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized awareness seminar entitled “Pink October: Early Breast Cancer Detection.”
Seminar Supervision and Implementation
The awareness seminar was presented and directly supervised by Assistant Lecturer Hiba Diyaa Abdul Amir.
The activity aimed to promote health awareness among female staff members and university students regarding breast cancer prevention, while emphasizing the essential role of biomedical engineering technologies in developing screening and early diagnostic systems to reduce the risks associated with the disease.
Medical, Technical, and Preventive Topics
The seminar addressed several integrated medical and engineering topics, including:
* Highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and detection in improving recovery rates and reducing the physical and psychological complications experienced by patients.
* Explaining the steps and procedures of monthly breast self-examination in a simple, practical manner, while emphasizing the importance of consulting doctors and specialized medical centers immediately if any unusual changes are noticed.
* Reviewing modern medical devices and diagnostic technologies, including mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
* Highlighting the role of biomedical engineers in calibrating sensitive diagnostic systems and performing regular preventive maintenance to ensure accurate results and protect patients and medical staff from radiation-related risks.
The seminar attracted considerable interest and active participation, with attendees contributing valuable discussions and emphasizing the importance of continuing awareness activities that have a direct impact on public health and society.
Seminar Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This awareness seminar directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly:
* SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Raising preventive health awareness and encouraging early detection to protect women’s health and improve community well-being.
* SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Emphasizing women’s healthcare needs and providing the necessary medical education and guidance to empower women in terms of health and psychological well-being.
