As part of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability and support the transition toward renewable energy technologies in healthcare institutions, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized awareness and guidance seminar entitled “Clean Energy and Green Hospitals.”
Seminar Supervision and Implementation
The seminar was presented and directly supervised by Lecturer Zainab Ali Jabr.
The seminar aimed to enhance students’ and engineering staff’s knowledge of environmental sustainability in hospitals and highlight the role of biomedical engineers in designing and operating environmentally friendly healthcare systems that ensure energy efficiency.
Key Topics and Awareness Guidelines
The seminar addressed several important scientific and environmental topics, including:
* Introducing the concept of clean energy and its strategic importance in developing and modernizing healthcare and medical institutions.
* Highlighting the role of renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, in reducing conventional energy consumption, lowering carbon emissions, and minimizing environmental pollution.
* Explaining the concept of Green Hospitals and the environmentally responsible practices that should be adopted in the healthcare sector, such as conserving electricity and water.
* Clarifying modern methods for the safe management and environmentally sound treatment of medical waste, as well as improving the energy efficiency of medical devices and equipment without compromising the quality of healthcare services.
The seminar witnessed active participation and valuable scientific discussions, with attendees emphasizing the importance of keeping pace with global developments in implementing environmental standards in modern hospitals.
Seminar Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This guidance seminar directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly:
* SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy: Promoting the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, in healthcare facilities.
* SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Improving healthcare environments and reducing pollution and environmental risks associated with energy use and medical waste management.
* SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Encouraging the efficient use of natural resources and medical equipment, alongside safe and sustainable waste management.
* SDG 13 – Climate Action: Reducing harmful emissions and contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
