The College of Administrative Sciences at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a specialized scientific workshop on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, entitled “The Devaluation of the Iraqi Dinar: Between Economic Gains and Social Costs.” The workshop was held under the patronage of the University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, with the participation of distinguished academics and experts specializing in economics, finance, and monetary policy. The workshop was attended by professors and researchers from various Iraqi universities, alongside community figures from Babil Governorate. Participants discussed the implications of exchange rate policies for the Iraqi economy, citizens’ purchasing power, and living standards, as well as the challenges associated with monetary and fiscal policies amid domestic and international economic developments. The workshop featured three main themes. The first addressed the social costs of devaluing the Iraqi dinar and was presented by Professor Dr. Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an economic expert at Al-Ma’aqal University. His presentation examined the effects of changes in the currency’s value on purchasing power and the cost of living for different segments of society. The second theme, presented by Professor Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, Head of the Digital Economics Department at the Iraqi University, focused on the potential economic gains of exchange rate adjustments and their effects on monetary and fiscal policy, highlighting the characteristics of the Iraqi economy and the challenges it faces. The third theme was presented by Professor Dr. Kamel Allawi, Professor of Monetary and Fiscal Policies at the University of Kufa. His presentation examined international monetary developments and the impact of US Federal Reserve decisions, fluctuations in the US dollar, and global monetary policies on domestic financial stability. The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of relying on scientific studies and specialized economic analyses when making exchange rate decisions. Participants also stressed the need to balance economic objectives with social considerations and take into account the Iraqi economy’s substantial dependence on oil revenues, thereby supporting economic stability and mitigating potential adverse effects on the most vulnerable groups. This workshop reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s and the College of Administrative Sciences’ commitment to strengthening the role of academic institutions in addressing national economic issues and encouraging scientific dialogue and knowledge exchange among researchers and specialists. These efforts aim to support scientific research, provide insights into current economic challenges, and contribute to serving the community. Al-Mustaqbal University – The No. 1 University in Iraq
