Al-Mustaqbal University organised a specialised scientific workshop entitled “Iraqi Dinar Devaluation: Balancing Economic Gains and Social Costs” on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Held under the patronage of the University President, Professor Dr Hassan Shakir Majdi, and under the supervision of the College Dean, Professor Dr Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, the workshop brought together economists and academics to examine exchange-rate policy and its implications for Iraq’s economy and society.
The workshop was attended by professors and researchers from various Iraqi universities, alongside community representatives from Babil Governorate. It provided a platform for exchanging academic perspectives on economic and monetary challenges and analysing the potential effects of changes in the national currency’s value on different sectors and social groups.
The programme addressed three main themes. The first, the social costs of dinar devaluation, was presented by Professor Dr Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an economic expert at Al-Maaqal University. His presentation examined the potential effects of currency depreciation on purchasing power, living standards and the financial burdens faced by different segments of society.
The second theme, economic gains and exchange-rate policy, was presented by Professor Dr Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, Head of the Digital Economics Department at Al-Iraqia University. He discussed the potential economic consequences of exchange-rate adjustments and their implications for fiscal and monetary policies within the Iraqi economic context.
The third theme focused on international monetary developments and domestic financial stability. It was presented by Professor Dr Kamil Allawi, Professor of Monetary and Fiscal Policies at the University of Kufa, who explained the role of US Federal Reserve decisions, movements in the US dollar and international monetary policies in shaping domestic financial conditions.
The workshop concluded with recommendations emphasising the need for comprehensive scientific studies to inform exchange-rate decisions, taking into account both economic and social considerations. The recommendations highlighted the importance of balancing financial objectives with their effects on living standards and accounting for Iraq’s dependence on oil revenues to support economic stability and protect vulnerable groups.
The workshop reflects the College of Administrative Sciences’ commitment at Al-Mustaqbal University to providing an academic platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange on national economic issues. It also strengthens engagement among academics, experts and those interested in economic affairs, contributing to knowledge dissemination and evidence-based discussion.
