As part of its commitment to promoting mental health and occupational safety among engineering and medical professionals, and in continuation of the university’s awareness and guidance activities, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized an awareness seminar entitled “Managing Occupational Stress in the Hospital Environment.”
Seminar Presenter and Organizer
The seminar was delivered and directly supervised by Asst. Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar.
The seminar aimed to prepare and qualify biomedical engineering students and engineers to face field challenges within healthcare institutions, highlighting the importance of maintaining psychological well-being and professional balance while working in hospitals, where conditions can be critical and demanding.
Key Topics and Practical Guidelines
The seminar addressed several important guidance and practical topics, including:
* Understanding occupational stress: Identifying the psychological and work-related pressures faced by biomedical engineers in clinical settings, such as responding to unexpected emergencies, dealing with critical medical equipment failures, coordinating directly with medical staff and patients, and managing long working hours.
* Recognizing professional burnout: Explaining the signs and symptoms of burnout and emphasizing the importance of early identification to minimize its negative effects on job performance and overall health.
* Practical stress-management strategies: Introducing effective approaches to managing occupational stress, including organizing tasks and setting priorities, strengthening effective communication skills, maintaining personal well-being, and seeking support when necessary.
During the seminar, the presenter emphasized that safeguarding biomedical engineers’ mental health and psychological well-being directly contributes to the safe and accurate operation of medical devices and enhances the overall quality of healthcare services provided to patients.
The seminar witnessed active participation from students and other interested attendees, who raised questions and inquiries about effective ways to handle stressful situations in real-world hospital environments.
Activity Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This awareness seminar directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly:
* SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being — By promoting the mental health and occupational safety of biomedical engineering professionals, thereby supporting healthcare quality and patient safety.
* SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth — By encouraging healthy and safe working environments and developing professional coping skills that enhance productivity and efficiency within healthcare institutions.
