Department of Forensic Science at Al-Mustaqbal University Organizes a Scientific Workshop Entitled “DNA Profiling and Its Role in Crime Detection and Criminal Justice” – Assist. Lect. Howaida Nazzal Hussein As part of Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and developing students' research and practical skills, the Department of Forensic Science at the College of Science organized a scientific workshop entitled “DNA Profiling and Its Role in Crime Detection and Criminal Justice,” presented by Assistant Lecturer Howaida Nazzal Hussein. The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of modern genetic technologies and their applications in forensic investigations, criminal identification, and the administration of justice. The workshop addressed the fundamental concepts of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), its molecular structure, and its essential role in storing genetic information. It also explained the scientific principles of DNA profiling, which represents one of the most important identification techniques used in modern forensic laboratories. Furthermore, the workshop discussed the collection of biological evidence from crime scenes, including blood, saliva, hair containing roots, and human cells. It examined DNA extraction and analysis techniques, particularly Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis, emphasizing their importance in comparing genetic profiles and evaluating biological evidence in criminal investigations. Special attention was given to the role of DNA profiling in identifying victims and missing persons, supporting investigations into homicide and sexual assault cases, and excluding suspects when genetic evidence does not match. The workshop also emphasized proper evidence handling, contamination prevention, and maintaining the chain of custody to ensure reliable forensic results. The workshop sought to strengthen students' understanding of the relationship between theoretical genetic knowledge and practical forensic applications, while promoting scientific awareness of molecular technologies and their contribution to evidence-based criminal justice. In conclusion, the Department of Forensic Science emphasized the importance of organizing specialized scientific workshops that enhance students' academic and professional competencies and keep pace with advances in forensic genetics, reflecting Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to preparing qualified scientific professionals.
