In the first moments of any accident or medical emergency, time is the most valuable thing a patient has. This is when the emergency medical technician plays a vital role, as they are often the first trained professional to reach the patient before a doctor or arrival at the hospital. What they do in the first few minutes may determine whether the patient survives or not. Emergency medical technicians deal with situations where waiting is not an option, such as cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, severe bleeding, shock, and traffic accidents. They do not diagnose diseases; instead, they recognize life-threatening conditions and respond immediately. They begin by assessing the patient using the ABC approach (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation). They then control bleeding, open the airway, and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when necessary. Finally, they transport the injured patient to the hospital as quickly and safely as possible. Their role is not limited to first aid. They also perform triage during disasters and mass-casualty incidents, deciding who needs immediate intervention and who can wait. This ensures that limited resources are directed toward those who need them most. They also serve as a vital link between the accident scene and the hospital by providing doctors with accurate information about the patient's condition and the events that occurred, allowing treatment to begin without wasting valuable time. To succeed in their work, emergency medical technicians need scientific knowledge, continuous practical training, the ability to remain calm under pressure, quick decision-making skills, and a compassionate approach when dealing with injured patients and their families during frightening moments. Therefore, investing in the training and equipment of emergency medical technicians increases survival rates, reduces complications and permanent disabilities, and eases the pressure on hospitals. They are an essential part of any successful healthcare system. Although their work often goes unnoticed, they save many lives. Al-Mustaqbal University The No. 1 University in Iraq
