Breast diseases are among the common health problems affecting women and may occur at different ages. These diseases include benign, non-cancerous conditions as well as malignant conditions such as breast cancer. Early diagnosis helps determine the nature of the disease and select the appropriate treatment, contributing to better treatment outcomes and maintaining the patient’s health. Types of Breast Diseases : Breast diseases vary between benign and malignant conditions, and their symptoms and effects differ depending on the type of disease. One of the common benign conditions is fibrocystic breast changes, which involve changes in breast tissue that may cause pain, swelling, and the development of lumps. These symptoms may vary with the menstrual cycle. Fibroadenoma is another common benign tumor, particularly among young women, and usually appears as a firm, smooth lump that can move easily beneath the skin. Breast cysts are another type of breast condition. They are fluid-filled sacs that may cause pain or a feeling of fullness and pressure in the breast. Mastitis is another condition affecting the breast tissue and commonly occurs during breastfeeding. It may be accompanied by pain, redness, and swelling. Breast cancer, on the other hand, is a malignant disease resulting from the abnormal growth of cells in breast tissue. If it is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, it may spread to other parts of the body. Diagnostic Methods : The diagnosis of breast diseases depends on a range of examinations determined by the physician according to the symptoms and the patient’s health condition. Evaluation usually begins with a clinical breast examination to detect lumps or abnormal changes. Ultrasound may be used to help distinguish between solid masses and fluid-filled cysts, while mammography is used to detect abnormal changes and masses in breast tissue. In certain cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to obtain more detailed images of the breast tissue. A biopsy may also be performed, which involves taking a sample of breast tissue and examining it in the laboratory to determine the nature of the condition. Treatment Methods : Treatment for breast diseases varies depending on the type and severity of the disease and the patient’s condition. In cases of fibrocystic breast changes, treatment may be limited to medical follow-up and pain management when necessary. Fibroadenomas may be monitored regularly, while surgical removal may be considered when necessary. For breast cysts, observation may be sufficient in some cases, while fluid may be aspirated with a needle if the cyst causes bothersome symptoms. Treatment of mastitis depends on its cause. Antibiotics may be used when a bacterial infection is present, along with treatment of the associated symptoms. In cases of breast cancer, the treatment plan varies according to the type and stage of the tumor and its biological characteristics. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapy, according to the physician’s assessment. Prevention and Early Detection : Paying attention to any abnormal changes in the breast and consulting a physician when they occur can contribute to the early detection of diseases and help determine their causes. Changes that require medical evaluation may include the appearance of a new lump in the breast or armpit, an unusual change in the shape or size of the breast, skin changes such as redness or dimpling, and abnormal nipple discharge, particularly bloody discharge. These signs do not necessarily indicate cancer, but they require appropriate medical evaluation to determine their cause. Conclusion: Breast diseases range from benign to malignant conditions, and the selection of appropriate treatment depends on accurate diagnosis, the type of disease, and its severity .Early detection and medical follow-up contribute to identifying pathological changes at an early stage and improving treatment outcomes, thereby helping maintain breast health and reduce potential complications.
