Water is one of the most important natural resources essential for life and the survival of living organisms. All living organisms require clean water free from harmful pollutants. However, water sources may become contaminated as a result of various industrial and agricultural activities. Among the major pollutants that threaten water quality are heavy metals. Examples of these metals include lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium. Heavy metals are particularly hazardous due to their ability to accumulate in living organisms. Exposure to high concentrations of these metals may lead to various health and environmental problems. Therefore, the detection of these metals has become an important aspect of water quality monitoring. Analytical chemistry plays a fundamental role in identifying pollutants and determining their concentrations. Analytical chemistry relies on a range of modern methods and techniques. One of the most important techniques used in the analysis of heavy metals is Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). This technique is characterized by its ability to detect low concentrations of metallic elements. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) is also used to analyze many chemical elements. ICP-MS is distinguished by its high sensitivity and accuracy in determining different elements. These techniques are used in environmental laboratories to examine water samples. Samples are collected from rivers, wells, and various water sources for the necessary analyses. The analytical results help determine the extent of heavy metal contamination in water. They also allow metal concentrations to be compared with permissible limits. These analyses contribute to identifying and controlling sources of pollution. They also help in taking appropriate measures to treat contaminated water. Continuous monitoring of water quality is important for protecting human health. Chemical analysis also contributes to preserving the environment and aquatic organisms. The development of modern analytical instruments has increased the speed and accuracy of chemical analyses. Therefore, analytical chemistry has become an important part of environmental and health studies. In conclusion, the use of analytical chemistry to detect heavy metals helps ensure water quality and protect humans and the environment from the risks of pollution. Ruba abd al majid.
