Cycas revoluta is one of the ancient seed plants belonging to the group of gymnosperms. It has a palm-like appearance, although it does not belong to the palm family. The plant has a relatively short or tall woody stem depending on its age, with a crown of large, pinnate leaves at the top. These leaves are characterized by their rigidity and dark green color. New leaves emerge in successive clusters and are soft when they first appear, becoming firmer as they mature. Cycas is a dioecious plant, meaning that male and female reproductive structures occur on separate plants. It does not produce flowers or true fruits like angiosperms; instead, it produces cones and distinctive seed-bearing structures. Male plants bear a large cone that produces pollen grains, while female plants bear structures containing ovules that develop into large seeds after fertilization. The seeds of some Cycas species are characterized by bright colors that help attract organisms involved in their dispersal. The plant is characterized by slow growth and long longevity, and it may survive for very long periods under suitable conditions. Cycas is important in the study of gymnosperm evolution because it retains several characteristics that help in understanding ancient seed plants. It is also widely used as an ornamental plant in gardens and warm regions because of its distinctive appearance. However, its parts contain toxic compounds and therefore should not be used as food. Its morphological and reproductive characteristics make Cycas revoluta a suitable model for studying gymnosperms and plant evolution. Al-Mustaqbal University – The First University in Iraq
