Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency resulting from a dysregulated response of the body to infection, which may lead to organ dysfunction. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment are among the most important factors in reducing complications and mortality. Introduction Sepsis represents a significant challenge in emergency medicine due to the variability of its clinical manifestations and its rapid progression. Therefore, the medical team must recognize the early signs of sepsis and initiate assessment and treatment without delay. Initial Assessment The initial assessment includes measuring vital signs and evaluating the airway, breathing, and circulation, as well as assessing the level of consciousness and urine output. It also involves looking for signs of tissue hypoperfusion. Investigations may include serum lactate levels, blood cultures, complete blood count, renal and liver function tests, and other investigations depending on the suspected source of infection. Treatment Treatment involves administering appropriate antibiotics in a timely manner and controlling the source of infection when necessary. Appropriate intravenous fluids should also be administered to patients experiencing hypoperfusion. If hypotension persists despite fluid resuscitation, the patient may require vasopressors such as norepinephrine. Role of the Emergency Team The emergency team plays a crucial role in the rapid recognition of sepsis, initiating resuscitation, administering appropriate treatment, monitoring the patient’s response, and transferring critically ill patients to the intensive care unit when necessary. Conclusion Sepsis is a medical emergency that requires early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Following a systematic approach to assessment and resuscitation, timely administration of antibiotics, and effective source control can improve patient outcomes and reduce complications.
