As part of its efforts to raise awareness of the water and environmental challenges facing Iraq, a scientific workshop entitled “Water Resources Management in Iraq under Climate Change and Water Scarcity: Challenges and Sustainable Engineering Solutions” was organized in September 2026. The workshop was prepared by Assistant Lecturer Farah Hameed Abdulkhader, from the Water Resources specialization at the Civil Engineering Department, Al-Mustaqbal University, with the participation of Department Rapporteur Assistant Lecturer Lina Hussein Ali and Assistant Lecturer Zahra Hussein.
The workshop addressed the current state of Iraq's water resources and the challenges posed by climate change, water scarcity, and declining flows in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It also highlighted how traditional irrigation methods and rising water demand affect the sustainability of water resources. Furthermore, it presented a range of sustainable engineering solutions, including the development of modern irrigation systems, the reuse of treated wastewater, the rehabilitation of dams and reservoirs, and the application of smart technologies for monitoring and managing water resources, in addition to emphasizing the importance of protecting the Iraqi marshlands and promoting integrated water resources management.
The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of sustainable water resources management, raise awareness of the need to conserve water and improve its efficient use, and support water security in Iraq through the application of engineering solutions and modern technologies.
The workshop's themes align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), and Goal 15 (Life on Land), reinforcing the role of civil engineering in addressing environmental challenges and achieving sustainable development.
