Al-Mustaqbal University Hosts the Third Meeting to Prepare the Nationally Determined Contributions Document in Babil Governorate

Al-Mustaqbal University hosted the third meeting of the team responsible for preparing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document at the local level and assessing and managing climate risks in Babil Governorate. The meeting was attended by representatives of several government institutions, relevant sectors, civil society organizations, the Ministry of Environment, the international organization CRS, and Al-Aghsan Foundation. During his reception of the participants, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, affirmed the University’s readiness to support the team’s work, emphasizing the importance of unifying governmental, academic, and community efforts to address the impacts of climate change and move from identifying challenges toward implementing practical, measurable, and scalable solutions. Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, highlighted the University’s key practices in sustainability and climate action, including expanding the use of clean energy, increasing green coverage, source-based waste sorting, promoting environmentally friendly transportation and smart agriculture, as well as the University’s initiatives supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting discussed priorities for climate mitigation and adaptation projects in Babil Governorate, along with the major challenges facing the governorate, particularly water scarcity, rising temperatures, drought, desertification, agricultural land degradation, dust storms, and declining vegetation cover, in addition to their social, economic, and health impacts. The participants also discussed a number of proposed solutions, including sustainable water resource management, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, afforestation, waste management, and institutional capacity building, as a step toward supporting project implementation and securing the necessary funding. The meeting reaffirms Al-Mustaqbal University’s role in supporting sustainability and climate action and strengthening cooperation with governmental and international institutions and civil society organizations, contributing to the development of local solutions to address climate risks and achieve a more sustainable future for Babil Governorate.
