Professor Dr. Ahmed Khudair Al-Hamiri, Head of the Department of Anesthesia Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies at Al-Mustaqbal University, participated as Chair of the Master’s thesis defense committee for Ibtehal Salman Ailan, a postgraduate student at the College of Basic Education, University of Sumer in Dhi Qar Governorate. The thesis was entitled: “An Epidemiological and Molecular Study of Enterobius vermicularis Infection among Children in Selected Areas of Northern Dhi Qar.” The defense committee consisted of Professor Dr. Ahmed Khudair Al-Hamiri as Chair, Professor Dr. Azhar Mohammed Ghali as Member, Assistant Professor Dr. Imad Kadhim Ali as Member, and Assistant Professor Dr. Muayyad Mujbil Obaid as Member and Supervisor. The study investigated the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection among children in Al-Rifai, Qalat Sukar, and Al-Fajr districts in northern Dhi Qar Governorate. It also examined selected demographic and seasonal factors, immune and hematological indicators, and the molecular characterization of the parasite. The study included 210 samples from children aged 1–10 years, collected from August 2025 to May 2026 using the cellophane tape technique. The results recorded 39 cases of infection, with an overall prevalence of 18.57%. Infection rates varied according to age and season, with the highest rate recorded among children aged 4–6 years and during summer. The study also revealed significant decreases in some immune and hematological indicators among infected children compared with the control group. At the molecular level, the COX1 gene of the parasite was successfully amplified using PCR. Four isolates were deposited in the GenBank database under accession numbers PZ292832–PZ292835. Phylogenetic analysis showed genetic similarity between the Iraqi isolates and isolates registered from several countries, with a close genetic relationship between two Iraqi isolates, supported by a Bootstrap value of 99%. The study used Chi-square and Independent T-test statistical analyses to determine statistically significant differences.
