Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, participated in the IAU-EAIE Internationalisation Leadership Dialogue, held on 8 September 2026 at The Sir Jim McDonald Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom. His participation came following a high-level invitation from the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE), as part of efforts to strengthen international academic cooperation and facilitate the exchange of strategic expertise and perspectives among higher education leaders from around the world. The dialogue addressed a range of key issues related to internationalisation in higher education amid current global challenges and transformations, while highlighting international experiences in developing sustainable academic partnerships, strengthening international cooperation strategies, and enhancing the global presence of universities. The event opened with welcoming remarks from the host institution, the University of Strathclyde, followed by addresses from Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and Mr. Mervyn Baker, Chief Executive Officer of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). The programme also featured a keynote presentation entitled “Leading Internationalisation in Turbulent Times,” delivered by Sir Anton Muscatelli, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The presentation explored advanced leadership perspectives and strategies for navigating rapidly changing higher education environments. A key focus of the keynote was the VUCA Prime leadership model, which emphasises four fundamental principles: Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. These principles were presented as essential foundations for leading higher education institutions and responding effectively to challenges in an increasingly complex and volatile global environment. The dialogue further explored models and strategies for developing equitable and sustainable university partnerships, alongside internationalisation market analysis and recent data and statistics on global trends in international student mobility and recruitment. Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi also took part in a series of interactive sessions and roundtable discussions addressing the future of international partnerships, criteria for selecting strategic partners, joint academic programmes, research collaboration, and the importance of strengthening the principle of reciprocity in international partnerships. The discussions also examined ways to rethink internationalisation in higher education, including the integration of international perspectives into curricula, the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning and academic mobility, and the expansion of virtual exchange as a modern and sustainable approach to strengthening international academic engagement. On the sidelines of the event, the President of Al-Mustaqbal University held a meeting with Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU). The meeting focused on exploring future opportunities for academic and research partnerships. During the meeting, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi presented her with a commemorative gift reflecting the rich heritage and civilisation of Iraq. He also held a number of meetings with leaders and representatives of participating academic institutions, during which opportunities for cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the development of new international academic and research partnerships were discussed.
