The nettle plant (Urtica dioica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Urticaceae. It is distributed across many temperate regions, particularly in soils rich in organic matter. The plant has an erect and branched stem, while its leaves and stems are covered with fine hairs known as stinging hairs, which are among the most distinctive characteristics of this plant. These stinging hairs function as an effective defense mechanism. When touched, their tips break off and act like tiny needles that penetrate the skin, resulting in the release of substances that cause a burning sensation, itching, and irritation. In this way, the hairs help protect the plant's tissues from herbivorous animals. Nettle leaves are opposite, with an ovate or heart-shaped form and serrated margins, while the plant produces relatively small and inconspicuous flowers that are grouped into inflorescences. Nettle contains a wide variety of phytochemical compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic compounds, minerals, and several biologically active substances. The plant has been used since ancient times in traditional medicine in various communities, and its leaves are also consumed as food after cooking or appropriate processing. Chemical studies indicate that nettle contains compounds that may possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, making it an important subject of botanical and medical research. Nettle also plays an ecological role by providing food and shelter for certain insects and small organisms. It represents a clear example of the evolution of chemical and mechanical defense mechanisms in plants. Al-Mustaqbal University – The First University in Iraq
