Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majid, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, explored the latest research trends and advanced applications in artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart manufacturing during a scientific tour of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), affiliated with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in the United Kingdom, on 7 September 2026.
During the tour, the University President gained insights into the laboratory’s research environment and its projects that integrate academic knowledge with industrial applications, involving researchers and postgraduate students in collaboration with a number of global companies and institutions. This demonstrated the importance of partnerships between universities and the technology sector in developing solutions to future challenges.
The tour covered several specialised fields, including assistive robotics for healthcare and smart living, where he explored the work of the Personalised Assisted Living Studio and intelligent systems designed to support older adults, enhance their independence, and improve their quality of life.
The tour also addressed autonomous vehicles and independent systems, including research activities associated with initiatives such as VENTURER, which provide models of collaboration between research institutions and industry in developing advanced solutions for the future of transportation.
In the industrial field, the University President examined applications of advanced manufacturing and industrial robotics, including hybrid additive manufacturing and the use of KUKA Robots in production processes requiring high levels of precision and flexibility.
The tour also featured advanced examples of quadruped robots and interactive humanoid robots, including Pepper and PAL Humanoid Robots, with a focus on the use of artificial intelligence in processing sensory data, human interaction, decision-making, and autonomous task execution.
Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majid emphasised that direct engagement with leading international research experiences represents an important avenue for exchanging knowledge and expertise. He noted that communication with advanced scientific centres contributes to strengthening the capabilities of researchers and postgraduate students while supporting the University’s efforts to localise modern technologies and promote applied research and innovation.
The tour forms part of Al-Mustaqbal University’s vision to strengthen its engagement with the international research community, expand academic and technological cooperation, and benefit from global expertise in developing an educational and research environment capable of keeping pace with rapid technological transformations.
This initiative supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through investment in knowledge, research, innovation, and international scientific collaboration.
