Al-Mustaqbal University Strengthens Its Global Presence in Sustainability at the UI GreenMetric Workshop in Germany

Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and specialists in sustainability from around the world. The University delegation included Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majidi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majidi, Dean of the College of Engineering. The participation focused on exchanging international expertise in university sustainability, green infrastructure, energy, water, resource and waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and scientific research. The workshop was particularly significant as it was hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, one of the world’s leading models of sustainable university campuses. The campus ranked first in Germany and fourth worldwide in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings and has maintained its position as the leading German university in the ranking since 2017. On the sidelines of the workshop, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, to discuss opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of expertise in sustainability, while presenting the University’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable campus. The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to support university sustainability worldwide. The delegation also presented the University’s Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, and honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in recognition of their roles in supporting sustainability, academic cooperation, and the organization and hosting of the workshop. This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to strengthening its international partnerships, benefiting from leading global experiences, and improving its performance in international sustainability indicators. It also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the expansion of the impact of its sustainability initiatives from the university campus to the wider community.
