Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, part of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from universities and international institutions.
The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation comprised Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering, reflecting the University's commitment to strengthening its international academic presence and expanding opportunities for cooperation and knowledge exchange in the fields of university sustainability, green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water and waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and sustainability-oriented research.
The hosting of the workshop by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld carries particular international significance, given the campus's leading position in university sustainability. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld ranked first in Germany and fourth worldwide. It has also maintained the top position among German universities in the ranking since 2017, making it one of the world's leading models for implementing sustainability principles and practices within university campuses.
On the sidelines of the workshop, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation held a meeting with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, during which they discussed opportunities to strengthen academic communication and cooperation, as well as exchange expertise and best practices in sustainability across higher education institutions. The delegation also presented the University's experience and initiatives aimed at developing a sustainable campus model and enhancing its performance in global sustainability rankings and indicators.
As part of its efforts to strengthen international academic relations, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation presented the University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, in recognition of the organization's efforts to support sustainable practices and promote sustainability across universities and higher education institutions worldwide.
The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in appreciation of the University's distinguished role in supporting sustainability initiatives and developing an advanced university model that has earned a prominent position internationally.
The delegation further honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in recognition of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and his contributions to advancing international academic cooperation and partnerships in the fields of environmental sustainability.
Al-Mustaqbal University's participation in this international event is in line with its vision of strengthening international academic partnerships, improving its performance in global sustainability indicators, and benefiting from leading international experiences in developing sustainable universities and managing their resources efficiently.
The participation also provided an important opportunity to showcase the initiatives and practices adopted by Al-Mustaqbal University in the field of sustainable development, while extending their impact beyond the university campus to the wider community. These efforts contribute to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reinforcing the University's role as an active academic institution committed to building effective international partnerships and exchanging knowledge and expertise on global environmental and development priorities.
