University of Al-Mustaqbal: International Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop on the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, a campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences in the Federal Republic of Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together a wide range of university leaders, academics, experts, and specialists in sustainability from universities and international institutions. The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation was represented by Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University. The participation reflects the University's commitment to strengthening its academic and international presence and expanding opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of global expertise and best practices in university sustainability. The workshop addressed a number of key areas related to the development of sustainable universities, including green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water and waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and research in sustainability. It also provided a platform for discussing leading international experiences and practices in developing environmentally friendly university campuses and enhancing the role of universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The hosting of this international event by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld is particularly significant given the campus's outstanding position in the field of university sustainability. According to the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first among German universities and fourth worldwide, maintaining its leading position in green campus development and sustainable environmental practices. Al-Mustaqbal University's participation in this international workshop reaffirms its commitment to promoting the concept of sustainability within the university environment, benefiting from advanced international experiences, and supporting academic cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and expertise with specialized universities and international institutions. The University's participation also represents an important step in its ongoing efforts to develop projects and institutional practices in the areas of sustainability, clean energy, resource management, and environmental protection, in line with international standards for assessing sustainable universities and further strengthening Al-Mustaqbal University's position and presence in international academic forums. The participation of the University's delegation in IWGM 2026 underscores Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to continuing its journey toward building a more sustainable university environment and strengthening its role in supporting sustainable development through education, scientific research, institutional practices, and international partnerships.
