Al-Mustaqbal University strengthened its international academic presence through its participation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by the Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists representing universities and international institutions.
The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation comprised Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shaker Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. Their participation reflects the University’s commitment to expanding its presence in international academic forums and strengthening the exchange of global expertise and experiences in university sustainability, green infrastructure, resource management, energy and water management, waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and scientific research.
The hosting of the workshop by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld holds significant international importance, given its position as an advanced model for implementing university sustainability practices. The campus ranked first among German universities in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings and fourth globally, while maintaining its position at the top of the German rankings since 2017.
During the participation, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation held a meeting with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Head of UI GreenMetric. The meeting addressed prospects for strengthening communication and cooperation and exchanging expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions. The delegation also presented Al-Mustaqbal University’s experience and initiatives aimed at developing a sustainable university campus model.
As part of efforts to strengthen international academic relations, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation presented the University’s shield to the Head of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to support sustainability practices and strengthen their presence within higher education institutions at the international level.
The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in recognition of the University’s distinguished role in supporting sustainability concepts and developing an advanced university model that has achieved a prominent global standing.
The delegation also honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in recognition of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and his contributions to supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability.
This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s strategic commitment to consolidating its presence in global academic forums, expanding its international partnerships, and benefiting from leading experiences in sustainability. It also supports the University’s continued development across global sustainability indicators, enhances the visibility of its initiatives and experiences in this field, and contributes to extending its impact beyond the university campus into the wider community, thereby supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and contributing effectively to the establishment of influential international academic partnerships.
