Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld), affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from universities and international institutions.
Al-Mustaqbal University was represented at the workshop by Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering, as part of the University's commitment to strengthening its international presence and exchanging expertise and experiences in the field of university sustainability.
The workshop addressed a number of key topics related to the development of sustainable universities, including green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water, waste management, sustainable transportation, education, scientific research, and the role of higher education institutions in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
During the event, the delegation of Al-Mustaqbal University met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, where they discussed ways to strengthen communication, cooperation, and the exchange of expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions. The meeting also highlighted Al-Mustaqbal University's experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable university campus. The delegation presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in appreciation of the organization's efforts to promote and support sustainability practices among universities worldwide.
The University delegation also met with Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, and presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield in recognition of the University's distinguished role in supporting sustainability and developing an advanced university model with an outstanding international reputation in this field.
The participation also included honoring Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability.
The hosting of the workshop by the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld holds particular significance due to its leading position in university sustainability. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric ranking, the campus was ranked first in Germany and fourth worldwide, making it one of the leading international models in implementing sustainability principles in higher education institutions.
This participation comes as part of Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to enhancing its performance in global sustainability indicators, strengthening its international academic partnerships, and benefiting from leading international experiences. These efforts contribute to promoting the principles of sustainable development and strengthening the University's role in international scientific and development forums.
