Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop on the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), held at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24 to 26, 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from international higher education institutions. The university delegation included Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shaker Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. The participation reflected the university’s commitment to strengthening its international academic presence and exchanging knowledge and expertise in sustainable campuses, green infrastructure, energy and water management, waste management, sustainable transportation, as well as sustainability-oriented education and research. During the workshop, the delegation explored the advanced sustainability model of Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, which ranked first among German universities and fourth globally in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The campus has maintained its leading position among German universities since 2017, highlighting the significance of the German experience in developing sustainable university environments and advancing institutional green transformation. The delegation also met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, where both sides discussed opportunities to strengthen academic cooperation, communication, and the exchange of expertise in university sustainability. The delegation also presented an overview of Al-Mustaqbal University’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable campus. During the meeting, the university’s shield was presented to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s international efforts to promote and advance sustainability practices across higher education institutions. As part of strengthening international academic relations, the delegation presented the Al-Mustaqbal University shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in recognition of the university’s contributions to supporting sustainability and developing an internationally recognized model of sustainable higher education. The delegation also honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and supporting international academic cooperation in environmental and sustainability-related fields. This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to advancing its institutional framework in accordance with international sustainability practices, strengthening global partnerships, and exchanging expertise and successful experiences. It also contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The participation further demonstrates the university’s vision of transforming sustainability from an institutional practice into an integrated framework whose impact extends to the wider community, thereby strengthening its position in international rankings and reinforcing its role in advancing education, research, and sustainable development.
