In line with its commitment to social responsibility and its mission to support environmental issues and sustainable development, and under the direction of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdy, Al-Mustaqbal University, represented by the Diwan Affairs Department and the Sustainable Development Division, participated in the national campaign to remove the invasive water hyacinth plant from the Euphrates River. The campaign was held under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and attended by the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, the Governor of Babylon, as well as representatives from various government institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteer teams. Engineer Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the University's Sustainable Development Division, stated that the participation of Al-Mustaqbal University and its Sustainability Ambassadors in this national initiative reflects the University's vision of transforming academic knowledge into practical initiatives that serve society and protect the environment. He explained that the rapid spread of the water hyacinth has become a significant environmental and water-related challenge, as it obstructs the flow of water in the Euphrates River and irrigation canals, negatively affects the efficiency of drinking water treatment plants, and consumes enormous quantities of water at a time when Iraq is facing increasing challenges related to water scarcity and climate change. He further emphasized that protecting water resources is a national responsibility requiring the collective efforts of government institutions, universities, civil society organizations, and the public. He affirmed that Al-Mustaqbal University places environmental awareness and the promotion of volunteerism among its highest priorities, believing that these efforts are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building a more environmentally conscious and resilient society. The campaign witnessed the active participation of the University's students and Sustainability Ambassadors, who contributed to the removal of the water hyacinth while also carrying out awareness activities aimed at promoting the protection of rivers and water resources. These efforts reflected the strong sense of responsibility and national belonging among the University's youth.
