In implementation of the directives of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and in alignment with its mission to serve the community and promote the principles of sustainable development, Al-Mustaqbal University, represented by the Department of Diwan Affairs and the Sustainable Development Division, participated in the national campaign to clean the Euphrates River from the water hyacinth plant. The campaign was launched under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, with the participation of the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, and the Governor of Babil, along with a number of governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteers.
Engineer Khalid Kazem Al-Salihi, Director of the Sustainable Development Division at the university, affirmed that the participation of Sustainability Ambassadors in this national campaign represents anof the university’s approach to transforming knowledge into impactful community practice. He pointed out that the water hyacinth plant has become a real environmental and water challenge due to the obstruction it causes to water flow in the Euphrates River and irrigation canals, in addition to its negative impact on the efficiency of drinking water production stations and its consumption of large quantities of water, at a time when Iraq is facing increasing challenges due to water scarcity as a result of climate change.
He added that protecting water resources is no longer the sole responsibility of government entities, but has become a shared national responsibility that requires the cooperation of universities, institutions, civil society organizations, and citizens. He explained that the university believes that spreading environmental awareness and volunteer work constitute a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development goals and building a society more capable of confronting environmental challenges.
The campaign witnessed active participation from university students and Sustainability Ambassadors who contributed to the removal of water hyacinth plants, alongside implementing awareness messages about the importance of preserving rivers and water resources, in a scene that reflects the spirit of belonging and national responsibility among the university’s youth.
Al-Mustaqbal University continues to implement its environmental and community initiatives based on its vision that a modern university is not only an institution for education and scientific research, but also a true partner in development, a sponsor of national initiatives, and a platform for preparing Al-Mustaqbal leaders capable of protecting both humanity and the environment.
Al-Mustaqbal University is the number one university in Iraq.
