Al-Mustaqbal University participated, under the directives of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, represented by the Diwan Affairs Department and the Sustainable Development Division, in the national campaign to remove water hyacinth from the Euphrates River. The campaign was launched under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and with the participation of the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, the Governor of Babylon, as well as a number of government institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteer teams, in support of national efforts to protect water resources and promote environmental sustainability. Engineer Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the Sustainable Development Division at the University, stated that the University’s participation in this national campaign reflects its commitment to social responsibility and to transforming environmental awareness into practical community initiatives. He noted that water hyacinth is considered one of the most dangerous invasive aquatic plants due to its obstruction of water flow in rivers and irrigation canals, its negative impact on the efficiency of drinking water treatment plants, and its excessive consumption of water, which further intensifies Iraq’s water security challenges. He added that protecting water resources is a shared national responsibility that requires the integration of efforts among educational institutions, government agencies, and civil society organizations. He emphasized that Al-Mustaqbal University is committed to promoting a culture of volunteerism and environmental awareness as key pillars for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The campaign witnessed active participation from the University’s students and Sustainability Ambassadors, who contributed to removing water hyacinth from the Euphrates River while also carrying out awareness activities aimed at promoting the importance of protecting rivers and preserving water resources, reflecting the strong sense of environmental responsibility and national belonging among the University’s youth.
