Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a modern psychological phenomenon closely associated with the widespread use of social media. It refers to the anxiety individuals experience when they believe that others are enjoying rewarding experiences without them. This feeling has become particularly common among young people due to their constant exposure to online content. FOMO can significantly increase stress and anxiety levels. Many young individuals feel compelled to stay connected to social media platforms in order to keep up with trends, events, and social interactions. Continuous comparison with the seemingly perfect lives displayed online often leads to dissatisfaction with one’s own life and achievements. The phenomenon is also linked to lower self-esteem and reduced life satisfaction. Young people may perceive themselves as less successful, attractive, or socially active than their peers. Furthermore, excessive engagement with social media can contribute to sleep disturbances, especially when devices are used late at night. Research suggests that FOMO may increase the risk of depression, loneliness, and emotional exhaustion. As a result, promoting digital literacy and encouraging balanced technology use are essential strategies for protecting mental health. Developing meaningful offline relationships and engaging in real-life activities can help reduce the negative effects of FOMO and improve overall well-being among young people.
