Viral diseases are among the most widespread illnesses affecting humans. They are caused by viruses that invade body cells and replicate inside them. These diseases vary in severity, ranging from mild conditions like the common cold to serious global outbreaks. Understanding how they spread is essential for prevention. Examples of Common Viral Diseases • Influenza (Flu): A respiratory illness causing fever, cough, and body aches. • Common Cold: A mild but very common viral infection. • COVID-19: A respiratory disease caused by coronavirus, known for rapid spread. • Measles: A highly contagious disease causing rash and fever. • Viral Hepatitis: Affects the liver and can become severe if untreated. ________________________________________ Modes of Transmission 1. Airborne transmission (droplets) Through coughing or sneezing. 2. Direct contact Such as touching or physical interaction with an infected person. 3. Contaminated surfaces Touching infected objects and then touching the face. 4. Blood and body fluids Seen in some infections like hepatitis. 5. Contaminated food and water Some viruses spread through unsafe food or water. ________________________________________ Prevention Methods • Regular hand washing • Covering mouth when coughing or sneezing • Avoiding close contact with sick individuals • Vaccination when available • Maintaining good hygiene ________________________________________ Conclusion Viral diseases spread quickly but can be controlled through awareness and proper preventive measures. Understanding transmission routes helps reduce infection risks significantly. Al-Mustaqbal University – the first university in Iraq.
