Microorganisms are among the smallest forms of life on Earth. They cannot be seen with the naked eye and require a microscope for observation. These include bacteria, viruses, fungi, microscopic algae, and protozoa. Despite their tiny size, they have a major impact on the environment and human health.
Types of Microorganisms
1. Bacteria
Single-celled prokaryotic organisms found in various environments such as soil, water, and the human body. Some are beneficial (e.g., aiding digestion), while others cause diseases.
2. Viruses
Smaller than bacteria and cannot reproduce independently; they require a host cell. They are responsible for many diseases like influenza.
3. Fungi
Include yeasts and molds. They can be unicellular or multicellular. Some are useful in food and medicine, while others are harmful.
4. Microscopic Algae
Photosynthetic organisms that produce oxygen and are mostly found in aquatic environments.
5. Protozoa
Unicellular eukaryotic organisms that live in moist environments. Some are pathogenic, such as those causing malaria.
