Forensic biology is one of the most important modern branches of criminal science. It relies on the analysis of biological materials to identify individuals and link them to crime scenes. This field has witnessed significant development with technological advancements, making it a crucial tool in solving complex crimes that are difficult to solve using traditional methods. Forensic biology primarily depends on the study of biological evidence such as blood, saliva, hair, tissues, and other bodily fluids, which may be left at a crime scene even in very small quantities. Through advanced techniques such as DNA analysis, it has become possible to identify perpetrators with high accuracy, even in cases where evidence is limited or deteriorated. One of the most prominent modern applications in this field is the use of DNA fingerprinting, which serves as a unique “biological identity” for each individual (except for identical twins). This technology has contributed to solving many criminal cases, either by convicting criminals or exonerating innocent people, thus enhancing the achievement of criminal justice. Forensic biology also plays a crucial role in determining the time of death by studying biological changes in the body, as well as in analyzing insects associated with corpses, a field known as forensic entomology. This helps estimate the time elapsed since death, especially in advanced stages of decomposition. In modern crimes such as cybercrime and bioterrorism, forensic biology has become increasingly important. It is used to track and analyze the sources of hazardous biological materials, contributing to the protection of societal and national security. Despite its importance, this field faces several challenges, including sample contamination, inadequate evidence collection, and a shortage of specialized personnel. Therefore, working in this field requires advanced training and meticulous evidence handling to ensure the reliability of the results. In conclusion, forensic biology is a fundamental pillar of the modern justice system. It combines science and technology to serve the truth and is one of the most influential fields in crime detection and achieving justice. Al-Mustaqbal University – the first university in Iraq.
