The Department of Biology at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a scientific workshop on Sunday, April 26, 2026, entitled “Practical Skills in Preparing and Examining Fungi in the Laboratory” for third-year students. The workshop was held in the medical building under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Banin Ma’an Karim, with follow-up from the department administration as part of the approved academic plan. The workshop aimed to equip students with fundamental practical skills in the field of laboratory mycology and to enhance their ability to handle fungal samples efficiently, starting from the preparation of suitable culture media to microscopic examination and accurate identification of fungi. The workshop included a practical explanation of the most important tools and materials used in the mycology laboratory, in addition to training students on preparing culture media and applying aseptic techniques for isolating and cultivating fungi. It also provided hands-on experience in preparing microscopic slides and using Lactophenol Cotton Blue stain to clearly visualize fungal structures. Furthermore, students were trained to examine hyphae, spores, and reproductive structures under the microscope, with clarification of the differences between cultural characteristics and microscopic features used in fungal identification. The workshop witnessed notable student engagement through practical application and interactive questions, which contributed to strengthening their understanding of laboratory aspects related to their field of study. This workshop comes as part of the ongoing efforts of the Department of Biology at Al-Mustaqbal University to develop students’ practical skills and enhance their academic level in line with the requirements of modern higher education.
