As part of its academic role in discussing pressing societal issues, the Department of Financial and Banking Sciences at the College of Administrative Sciences, Al-Mustaqbal University, held a specialized scientific seminar on Sunday, April 26, 2026, entitled:
“Legal Protection of Women from Domestic Violence in Iraqi Law.”
The seminar, which took place in the Activities Hall of the Medical Building, was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Hamza Eidan. It highlighted the concept of domestic violence as a phenomenon that can take physical, psychological, or economic forms.
The lecture focused on the constitutional aspect, reviewing the principles established by the 2005 Constitution, which explicitly emphasize the protection of the family and the prevention of all forms of violence.
Attendees, including faculty members and students, discussed the reality of current legislation. The seminar revealed a legal gap represented by the absence of a specific and direct law addressing domestic violence, with current reliance placed on general provisions within the Penal Code and Personal Status Law. It also reviewed the challenges hindering the protection of women, most notably the influence of customs and traditions, and the lack of immediate protection mechanisms for victims.
The seminar concluded with a comprehensive legal vision that included several key recommendations:
Accelerating the enactment of a specific domestic violence law that aligns with contemporary challenges.
Intensifying community awareness programs to change prevailing cultural attitudes toward women’s rights.
Establishing specialized bodies to provide immediate legal and psychological support to victims.
This event is part of a series of scientific and legal activities organized by the college to reinforce Al-Mustaqbal University’s role as a platform for spreading legal awareness and supporting the values of social justice and human rights in Iraqi society.
