Acrylic nails are among the most popular modern cosmetic techniques, widely used to enhance nail appearance and length. However, their increasing use raises health concerns due to the chemical substances involved, which may negatively affect nail and skin health.
Effects on Natural Nails:
Applying acrylic nails requires filing the natural nail surface, which leads to thinning and weakening over time. Additionally, removal using acetone causes dryness and increases the likelihood of nail breakage.
Infections and Fungal Growth:
Gaps may form between the natural nail and the acrylic layer, allowing moisture accumulation and promoting bacterial and fungal growth. This can result in discoloration or separation of the nail.
Allergic Reactions and Skin Irritation:
Acrylic materials contain compounds that may cause allergic contact dermatitis, leading to redness, itching, and irritation around the nails.
Chemical Exposure:
Acrylic products include chemicals such as methacrylates and formaldehyde, which may irritate the respiratory system and eyes with prolonged exposure, especially in poorly ventilated areas.
Impact on Nail Growth:
Continuous use of acrylic nails may weaken natural nail growth and damage nail layers, particularly without allowing recovery periods.
Occupational Hazards:
Salon workers are regularly exposed to chemical fumes, which may lead to respiratory problems or chronic allergies.
Conclusion:
Despite their cosmetic benefits, acrylic nails pose several health risks when used excessively or improperly. Therefore, moderation and proper nail care are strongly recommended.
