On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, held a specialized online lecture as part of the course “Sheep and Goat Production Techniques – Theory,” aimed at first-year students in both the morning and evening programs. The lecture was delivered by M.M. Sorour Hafiz Muhammad, This lecture serves as a complementary component to the prescribed curriculum, ensuring the continuity of the educational process and covering the precise scientific aspects of livestock. This lecture explored the importance of scientific classification in the animal kingdom, identifying the taxonomic placement of sheep and goats within the Bovidae family, which is characterized by hollow horns. The scientific content focused on the following topics: • Genera and species: Clarifying the differences between the domesticated genera of sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus), while touching on wild species such as mouflon, argali, and bezoar. • Genetic origins: Tracing the descent of current breeds from their wild ancestors and their scientific classification to facilitate their study. • Geographic and environmental distribution: Describing the characteristics of breeds in temperate regions, the Middle East, and the African and Asian deserts in terms of body type and wool yield. • Production types: Classification of breeds based on their production specialization (meat, wool, milk) or dual-purpose use. • Wool classification: Categorizing breeds according to the quality and length of wool fibers, ranging from fine wool such as Merino to coarse wool (carpet wool) for which Iraqi sheep are renowned.
