The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Education, Al-Mustaqbal University, held an awareness workshop on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, entitled “The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: From Recognition to Action.” The workshop targeted second-year students from the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences and took place in Hall (301), on the third floor of the Humanitarian Building. The workshop was held under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, and with the support of the Dean of the College of Education, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Rawdan Salman. It was presented by Prof. Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah, Head of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, with the participation of Asst. Lecturer Shadan Salah Abdul Shabar, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College. The workshop addressed the significance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed annually on October 17, as a global occasion to shed light on the suffering of millions of people living in extreme poverty. It emphasized that poverty is not merely an economic challenge but also a violation of human rights and dignity, affecting individuals’ opportunities to enjoy a safe and dignified life. The workshop also discussed the importance of moving from recognizing the problem of poverty to taking practical measures to combat it. These include providing adequate housing, essential services, decent employment opportunities, and strengthening social protection systems, in addition to promoting equal opportunities and social justice to build more stable and equitable communities. The speakers emphasized that combating poverty is a shared responsibility requiring the combined efforts of governmental, educational, and community institutions. They also highlighted the importance of raising humanitarian awareness about supporting vulnerable groups and adopting policies and strategies that contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development. The workshop concluded by stressing that eradicating poverty cannot be achieved through solidarity and slogans alone; rather, it requires serious action, collective commitment, and effective investment to guarantee human rights, preserve dignity, and ensure the basic requirements of a decent life.
