It also emphasized their rights and the importance of providing them with the necessary care and protection amid the continuous increase in global life expectancy.
The workshop also highlighted this year’s theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” which calls for the development of healthcare, social, economic, and educational systems to meet the needs of societies experiencing an increase in the older population and to ensure a dignified life based on independence and active participation.
The speaker discussed the major challenges facing older persons, including age discrimination, violence, abuse and neglect, social isolation, economic difficulties, and gaps in social care and protection systems. She also stressed the importance of changing stereotypical perceptions of older persons and recognizing them as active members of society who possess valuable experience and wisdom and make significant contributions to their families and communities.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of strengthening intergenerational solidarity, promoting a culture of respect for older persons, safeguarding their rights and dignity, and encouraging their participation in community life, ensuring that longevity becomes an opportunity for a more meaningful, productive, and humane life
