The aviation sector is witnessing rapid development in electrical engineering, with increasing interest in developing all-electric aircraft as an important step toward a more sustainable and efficient future. These aircraft rely on electric motors and energy storage systems instead of conventional combustion engines, helping reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental pollution and noise generated by aviation operations. The main advantages of electric aircraft include high energy conversion efficiency and lower maintenance costs due to the smaller number of moving parts in electric motors. In addition, these aircraft offer the possibility of using renewable energy sources to recharge their batteries. These technologies also create new opportunities for developing short-distance air transportation, small aircraft, and urban air mobility services. Despite these advantages, all-electric aircraft face significant engineering and technological challenges. The most important is the relatively high weight of batteries compared with the amount of energy they can store, in addition to their limited energy density, which affects flight range, payload capacity, and operating time. These aircraft also require advanced energy management, cooling, and electrical control systems, as well as suitable infrastructure for fast and safe charging at airports. Engineering research is focusing on developing batteries with higher energy density and lower weight, improving motor efficiency and power distribution systems, and exploring new technologies such as solid-state batteries and advanced electric propulsion systems. These innovations are expected to expand the applications of electric aircraft in the coming years. The transition toward electric aviation represents more than just an improvement in propulsion systems; it is an engineering revolution that requires integration between electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, and software technologies. Despite the ongoing challenges, investment in research and development could make electric aircraft an important option for the future of air transportation, contributing to a more efficient aviation industry with a lower environmental impact.
