On the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed annually on 13 October as designated by the United Nations, the College of Education at Al-Mustaqbal University, represented by its Departments of Educational and Psychological Sciences and English Language, held an educational and awareness-raising seminar entitled “Psychological First Aid and Mechanisms for Reducing Crises.” The seminar was delivered by Professor Dr. Sahira Qahtan, Assistant Lecturer Ruqaya Wahab, and Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Obaid Zabbar. The seminar aimed to highlight the importance of psychological preparedness in facing crises and disasters, emphasizing that their impact is not limited to material losses and damage to infrastructure, but also extends to the mental health of individuals and communities, which represents the first line of defense in confronting crises and natural disasters and strengthening the ability to adapt and recover from them. The seminar addressed the concept of Psychological First Aid (PFA) according to the World Health Organization (WHO), explaining the principle of “Look, Listen, Link.” It also reviewed psychological protection mechanisms for students at different age levels during crises and disasters, as well as ways to provide them with appropriate psychological support. The seminar concluded with a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing community awareness. These included promoting a culture of psychological prevention and linking it to the Sustainable Development Goals, organizing practical field training workshops simulating crises to strengthen response and management skills, activating partnerships between educational and health institutions, and enhancing the role of educational counselors across all educational institutions. This seminar comes as part of the College of Education’s commitment to promoting psychological and educational awareness, strengthening a culture of preparedness and prevention, and contributing to building a resilient community capable of facing personal, family, and social crises and dealing with their consequences with awareness and responsibility. #College_of_Education_AlMustaqbal_University
