As part of its efforts to promote student-led scientific initiatives and connect medical and anatomical sciences with engineering innovation, students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized scientific seminar entitled “Hemodialysis: Kidney Functions and Dialysis Machine Engineering.”
Seminar Overview and Academic Supervision
The scientific seminar was delivered by outstanding students under the direct supervision of Assistant Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar.
The seminar aimed to enhance students’ presentation, academic research, and teamwork skills while emphasizing the importance of understanding kidney physiology and its direct implications for the design and maintenance of life-saving medical engineering systems.
Scientific Topics and Content
During the seminar, the students presented a comprehensive study integrating physiology and biomedical engineering. The main topics included:
* Kidney Anatomy and Physiological Functions: An overview of the anatomical structure of the kidneys and their essential functions, including filtering waste products and toxins from the blood, regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, and helping maintain stable blood pressure.
* Kidney Failure and Renal Replacement Therapy: An explanation of the pathological conditions associated with kidney failure and the circumstances that necessitate renal replacement therapies, particularly hemodialysis.
* Engineering Principles of Hemodialysis Machines: An explanation of the technical design and operating principles of hemodialysis machines, based on diffusion and ultrafiltration across the semipermeable membrane of the dialyzer.
* Main Components of the Hemodialysis Machine: An overview of the device’s essential components, including the blood pump responsible for controlling blood flow, the dialysate preparation and heating system, and advanced sensor, monitoring, and alarm systems designed to ensure patient safety throughout the treatment session.
The seminar also featured an educational video illustrating the flow of blood and dialysate through the machine and demonstrating the filtration process. The event concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session, enriching the seminar with valuable scientific insights.
The seminar witnessed considerable attendance and active engagement from participants, who praised the students’ high scientific standards and their ability to connect medical knowledge with practical engineering applications.
Activity Objectives in Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This scientific seminar directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly:
* SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: By highlighting technologies used to treat chronic diseases and support the quality of healthcare provided to patients with kidney failure.
* SDG 4 – Quality Education: By empowering students to lead academic activities and develop their research and practical skills in an interactive learning environment.
