Under the patronage of the President of Al Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr Hassan Shakir Majdi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Administrative Sciences, Professor Dr Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, the College organized a specialized scientific workshop on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, entitled “The Devaluation of the Iraqi Dinar: Between Economic Gains and Social Costs.” The workshop brought together a number of academics and experts specializing in economics, monetary policy, and financial affairs.
The workshop witnessed the participation of professors and researchers from various Iraqi universities, alongside several community figures from Babil Governorate. Discussions focused on the implications of changes in the Iraqi dinar’s exchange rate and their effects on economic conditions and living standards, as well as the challenges facing Iraq’s monetary and fiscal policies.
The workshop addressed three main themes. The first examined the social consequences of dinar devaluation, particularly its impact on purchasing power, living standards, and the financial burdens borne by different social groups. This session was presented by Professor Dr Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an economic expert at Al-Ma’aqal University.
The second theme explored potential economic gains and the implications of exchange rate adjustments for monetary and fiscal policies. It was presented by Professor Dr Abdulrahman Al-Mashhadani, Head of the Digital Economics Department at the University of Iraq.
The third theme, presented by Professor Dr Kamel Allawi, Professor of Monetary and Financial Policies at the University of Kufa, examined international monetary developments and the influence of US Federal Reserve decisions and fluctuations in the US dollar on domestic financial stability.
The workshop’s recommendations emphasized the importance of basing exchange rate decisions on comprehensive scientific studies that balance economic objectives with social considerations. They also highlighted the need to account for the specific characteristics of the Iraqi economy, particularly its heavy reliance on oil revenues, to strengthen economic stability and reduce the burdens on the most vulnerable social groups.
This scientific event reflects Al Mustaqbal University and the College of Administrative Sciences’ commitment to advancing scientific research and academic dialogue on key national economic issues. It also provides a platform for exchanging expertise and presenting evidence-based perspectives that support sustainable development and community service.
