As part of its efforts to enhance student scientific activities and connect anatomical and physiological concepts with engineering applications, students of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized workshop entitled: “Blood Flow Through the Heart and the Circulatory System” Workshop Presentation and Supervision The scientific workshop was presented by students under the direct supervision of Assistant Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar. The workshop aimed to develop students’ academic presentation skills and teamwork abilities while emphasizing the importance of understanding cardiac biomechanics and hemodynamics for biomedical engineers in developing and maintaining cardiac diagnostic technologies. Key Topics and Biomedical Engineering Applications During the workshop, students delivered a detailed explanation, supported by visual aids, of the anatomical structure and functions of the circulatory system. The main topics included: * The Anatomical Structure of the Heart: Introducing the four chambers of the heart (the two atria and two ventricles) and the cardiac valves that regulate the direction of blood flow. * The Pathway of Blood Through the Heart and Circulatory System: Explaining the process step by step: * Deoxygenated blood returns from the body tissues to the right atrium and then passes into the right ventricle. * Blood is pumped through the pulmonary artery to the lungs for gas exchange and oxygenation, completing the pulmonary circulation. * Oxygenated blood returns through the pulmonary veins to the left atrium and then enters the left ventricle. * Blood is pumped through the aorta to supply oxygen and nutrients to the body’s organs and tissues, completing the systemic circulation. * Integration with Modern Medical Technologies: Connecting physiological concepts with modern medical devices and systems, including: * Electrocardiography (ECG) devices. * Echocardiography systems. * Patient monitoring systems. The workshop witnessed significant interaction and scientific discussions among attendees, who expressed their appreciation for the students’ outstanding efforts in integrating medical knowledge with engineering applications. Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This workshop directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: By promoting scientific knowledge related to the early diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular health. * SDG 4 – Quality Education: By empowering students and developing their scientific, research, and academic skills through an interactive learning environment based on practical knowledge and application. Al-Mustaqbal University… Ranked First Among Private Universities in Iraq.
