A smart grid adds sensors, communication and software to the traditional power network, and artificial intelligence turns the data it produces into better decisions. AI can forecast demand hour by hour, detect faults and illegal connections, balance solar and diesel generation, and schedule batteries and flexible loads to cut peak demand. For Iraq, where summer demand exceeds supply and losses are high (commonly reported at over 30 percent, approximate), even small efficiency gains matter. Practical first steps include smart meters, upgraded SCADA systems, and machine learning for load forecasting, fault detection and predictive maintenance of transformers. These can be tested first on a university campus microgrid, where data is easy to collect and risks are low, before being scaled to city networks. Countries such as the UAE, India and several European states already use AI to manage grids with high shares of renewables, and their experience offers useful lessons. Success in Iraq will depend on reliable data, trained engineers, cybersecurity and clear regulation, which makes this a strong field for new research, graduate projects and partnerships with the Ministry of Electricity.
