As part of its efforts to strengthen its international presence and expand opportunities for academic cooperation, Al-Mustaqbal University participated in the proceedings of the UNIMED General Assembly 2026, represented by its President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi. The event was hosted by the University of Barcelona in Spain on 7–8 October 2026, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean University Union (UNIMED). The General Assembly brought together a wide range of university presidents and representatives of academic and educational institutions from across the Mediterranean region and Europe.
Discussing Strategic Priorities for Higher Education Development
The General Assembly featured discussions and the adoption of key strategic priorities within UNIMED’s action plan, aimed at advancing higher education and scientific research and strengthening the role of universities in addressing academic and developmental challenges. These priorities included higher education governance, digital education, intercultural dialogue, improving graduate employability and aligning students’ skills with labour market requirements, ensuring the continuity of education during emergencies and crises, and enhancing the contribution of universities to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Erasmus+ Programmes and International Academic Mobility
The meetings also included specialised sessions addressing proposals and future directions for the Erasmus+ Programme for 2028–2034, as well as mechanisms for expanding academic mobility opportunities for students and teaching staff. Discussions further focused on institutional capacity building, expanding international partnerships, and strengthening scholarship opportunities and Jean Monnet Actions, thereby promoting cooperation and the exchange of academic knowledge and expertise among universities.
In this context, Al-Mustaqbal University stands out as the only private university in Iraq to have secured a Jean Monnet grant under the European Union’s programmes. This achievement reflects the university’s growing international academic presence and its active engagement in European educational initiatives.
