Lecturer Zainab Mohammed Abbas, from Al-Mustaqbal University – College of Health Technologies and Medical – Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques, defended her Master’s thesis at the College of Science for Women, University of Babylon. The study focused on evaluating breast cancer and investigating the inhibitory activity of broccoli sprout extract loaded onto selenium nanoparticles against cancer cells.
The study included a diagnostic and clinical assessment of 600 female patients diagnosed with breast cancer, with analysis of a range of histopathological and molecular biomarkers, including the biological receptors ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67. In addition, the practical component of the study investigated the green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles loaded with broccoli sprout extract.
The findings demonstrated that the nanoparticle-based formulation exhibited greater inhibitory activity than the free extract in suppressing cancer cell growth. The study also reported a lower IC₅₀ value, accompanied by cellular changes associated with mechanisms of cell death, indicating the potential of this approach for further experimental investigations into cancer cell inhibition.
The significance of the study lies in the integration of green nanotechnology and bioactive plant-derived compounds into biomedical and cancer research. This approach may contribute to expanding experimental research aimed at exploring supportive therapeutic strategies and potential future applications in the field of breast cancer.
This scientific achievement reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to supporting its academic staff in pursuing postgraduate studies and advancing their research careers, thereby contributing to the development of academic and scientific competencies and strengthening the University’s presence in health-related and innovative research fields.
