The College of Science at the University of Babylon witnessed, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, the public defense of a Master’s thesis by researcher Ayat Abdul-Kareem Abdul-Hassan Salman, a lecturer at Al-Mustaqbal University – College of Health Technologies and Medical – Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques. The thesis was entitled: “The Biochemical and Thermodynamic Perspectives on the Function of Xanthine Oxidase in Regulating Ferroptosis in Type Two Diabetes Mellitus.” The thesis investigated the biochemical and thermodynamic aspects associated with the function of Xanthine Oxidase (XO) and its potential role in regulating ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The study also examined the relationship between enzyme activity and metabolic alterations, oxidative stress, and iron metabolism. The study is of scientific significance as it addresses the interplay among metabolic processes, oxidative stress, iron metabolism, and ferroptotic cell death, thereby contributing to a broader understanding of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The thesis defense committee comprised a distinguished group of professors specializing in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the Universities of Babylon and Kufa. The committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Lamia Abdul-Majeed Mohammed, with Prof. Dr. Hanaa Adai Ali and Prof. Dr. Hiba Rashid Kadhim serving as members, while Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Hussein Hadwan served as a member and supervisor.
