Al-Mustaqbal University hosted the third meeting of the team responsible for preparing the Locally Determined Contributions (NDC) Document and assessing and managing climate risks in Babil Governorate. The meeting was attended by representatives of several governmental institutions, relevant sectors, civil society organizations, the Ministry of Environment, the international organization CRS, and Al-Aghsan Foundation. During his reception of the participating delegation, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, which included Professor Makki Hadi Al-Shammari, Director General of the Department of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Middle Euphrates Region; Mr. Ghaith Al-Zuhairi, Representative of the Ministry of Environment; and Dr. Khadija Al-Jabri, Representative and Coordinator of CRS International Organization in Iraq, affirmed the University's readiness to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of the team's work. He emphasized the importance of integrating governmental, academic, and community efforts to address the impacts of climate change and moving beyond the stage of identifying challenges toward implementing practical solutions that are measurable and scalable. In a statement delivered on behalf of the University Presidency, Professor Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, highlighted Al-Mustaqbal University's key practices in the fields of sustainability and climate action. These include expanding the use of clean energy sources, increasing green coverage, source separation of waste, promoting environmentally friendly transportation, and supporting climate-smart agriculture. He also highlighted the University's initiatives and programs aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as its achievements in prominent positions in international sustainability and climate action rankings. For his part, Eng. Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the Sustainable Development Division and a member of the working team, explained that the meeting focused on identifying priorities and mitigation and adaptation projects related to climate change in Babil Governorate, as a preliminary step toward integrating them into support and financing pathways and working toward their practical implementation. The participants discussed the major climate challenges facing the governorate, foremost among them water scarcity, rising temperatures, drought and desertification, agricultural land degradation, dust storms, and declining vegetation cover, in addition to the associated social, economic, and health impacts. The meeting also emphasized the importance of adopting integrated and sustainable solutions, including improving water resource management, expanding the use of renewable energy, implementing climate-smart agricultural practices, increasing afforestation, strengthening waste management, and building institutional capacities. These measures would contribute to enhancing the governorate's capacity to adapt to climate risks and reduce their impacts. Al-Mustaqbal University's hosting of this meeting reaffirms its academic and community-oriented role in supporting sustainable development and climate action, while strengthening cooperation with governmental and international institutions and civil society organizations. This contributes to translating scientific knowledge and expertise into locally applicable solutions and supporting efforts to build a more sustainable future with greater resilience to climate challenges in Babil Governorate.
